Lemurs

From: $10.00 / month

Primarily Primates is home to 42 lemurs, including ring-tailed, red ruffed, black-and-white-ruffed and brown lemurs. Lemurs are primates found only on the African island of Madagascar and some tiny neighboring islands. In addition to the exotic pet trade, lemurs are mostly threatened by habitat destruction; the loss of their forest homes to logging, mining and “slash-and-burn” farming. Some of the lemurs at PPI were subjects of a university behavioral research program. Others were abandoned pets left in cages on a porch. A lemur’s life expectancy is 16-19 years in the wild, but up to 30 years in a sanctuary like PPI, benefitting from consistent nutrition and veterinary care.
