Born on May 2, 1999, Calamity Jane—better known as CJ—is the life of the party in her group, which also includes Emma, Jackson and Herbie. They arrived at PPI in April of 2025 from Freedom for Great Apes, an Oregon sanctuary that opened in 1995 but decided to close its doors as its chimpanzee group naturally diminished. A true socialite, she effortlessly connects with everyone, whether she’s sharing a grooming session with Emma or spending time with one of the boys. She is unmistakable, with her signature spiky hair, slender frame and ever-present fuzzy blanket. She can often be found lounging in one of the aerial tunnels beneath the canopy of trees, soaking up the joys of sanctuary life, free from exploitation.
