Baxter

From: $10.00 / month

Baxter was born at New York University in a lab for experimental medicine that is now defunct. He later became property of The Buckshire Corporation—a Pennsylvania-based company that leased animals primarily for scientific and cosmetic testing. Buckshire eventually leased Baxter and Walter, another resident of Primarily Primates, to a German television show called “Martin’s Working Wildlife”—which trained them to perform tricks for television audiences. When Baxter and Walter reached an age where they were difficult to control, they were returned to the United States and then rescued by PPI in 1999. As a reminder of his tumultuous past, sometimes Baxter does back-flips, claps his hands and “smiles” (actually a sign of training and fear of his owner). Currently Baxter is in a habitat adjacent to Effie and Jessie so they can get to know each other from a distance. The goal is to have this trio form a new social group. Just like in the wild, primates in sanctuaries benefit from change and new social groups.
